The Newmarket U16 footballers’ unbeaten run was ended on Friday night (14th August) in an enthralling and thrilling contest in the first round of the U16 football championship in Kanturk against Kanturk. From the start the atmosphere on the pitch was both nervous and intense, both teams finding it hard to settle, Newmarket had the advantage of the breeze in the first half but found it hard to capitalise on this advantage.
Newmarket’s minor hurlers were defeated in their second league outing of the year when they travelled to Kanturk on Monday evening where the home side claimed victory by 3-13 to 0-9.
Newmarket suffered defeat to Kanturk in the Ducon Cup at Kanturk on Friday evening by 1-16 to 0-7.
Defending Duhallow under 21 football champions Newmarket had to dig deep when two late points from John Lane and John Ryan helped them edge past Kanturk by 1-12 to 0-13 at the end of a gripping semi final played at Boherbue on Saturday evening to duly qualify for a fourth successive Duhallow final in the grade.
Newmarket retained the Duhallow U-21 A Football Championship on Saturday last against Kanturk on a score line of 0-12 to 1-5. The reply, which was played a full seven months after the drawn final, was on in a perfect Rockchapel field. Newmarket have completed a two in a row now having won it last year against Boherbue, again after a replay. This is the eight U-21 title for the club.
Newmarket’s minor footballers bowed out of the championship at the semi final stage when they were disappointingly defeated by Kanturk at Kiskeam on Wednesday evening in difficult conditions by 1-9 to 0-2.

A sensationally converted Kanturk sideline kick, which was the final piece of action in an enthralling contest, ensured Newmarket and Kanturk must meet again in the Duhallow under 21 football final. A memorable final ended 1-13 to 2-10 under the floodlit Knocknagree venue on Friday evening.

Newmarket gained their second victory in their Nevin Cup group and go into their final game topping the group with four points from two games, after they defeated Kanturk by 2-12 to 1-7 under a floodlit Kiskeam on Tuesday evening, in a game played in perfect conditions.

Newmarket’s minor footballers retained their Duhallow league title and in the process completed a championship and league double in the division for the second year in succession. In the final at Kanturk on Sunday, they defeated the home side by 1-11 to 1-7 in a repeat of the championship final.
The home side began brightly putting two points on the scoreboard. Newmarket were slow to settle and depended on their rearguard during the first half with John Scanlon and David Guiney in outstanding form throughout the hour. Nicky Flanagan converted a free after seventeen minutes for Newmarkets first score with Kanturk quick to regain their two point lead. John Lane punched a point for Newmarket but Kanturk again responded with a fourth point. Newmarket finished the half very well with points from Nicky Flanagan and John Ryan tieing the sides for the first time in the game. Newmarket maintained their momentum and driven on by the forward surges of Bart Daly they took the lead for the first time through a Jerry McCarthy point. Newmarket’s minor footballers created history when they claimed their third successive Duhallow championship and eighth title in total when defeating Kanturk by 1-10 to 2-4 in a keenly contested final played at Dromtariffe on Sunday.
Newmarket’s minor hurlers began their league campaign with a home defeat against a fine Kanturk side by 3-17 to 1-13.

Newmarket qualified to meet Millstreet in the Duhallow football final, when a late goal proved crucial in their two point victory over Kanturk in a thrilling semi-final played before a big attendance (gate receipts £4,020) at Boherbue on Sunday.
The goal came a minute before the end of normal time, when Michael Cottrell took the ball on a solo run through the Kanturk defence before giving goalkeeper Colman Lane no chance with a shot from close range.
