Back to back wins for under 21s
Robert Emmets continued their winning ways with victory over Croke Rovers on Saturday evening in Banteer.
In what was round two of the under 21 championship, Emmets took an early lead through Hugh O’Connor (2), Brian O’Keeffe and Mikey Browne. Crokes registered their opening score on nine minutes, which was quickly cancelled out by the boot of Dave Cottrell. A second Crokes point two minutes later was answered by Mikey Browne, to leave the scoreboard reading 0-06 to 0-03 at the quarter hour mark. Emmets took control of the remainder of the half claiming four unanswered points, with Conor Sheahan, Hugh O’Connor (2) and Cian O’Sullivan on target. Rovers completed the scoring of the period with a late point, to trail 0-10 to 0-04 at the break.
A heavily marked Hugh O’Connor opened the second half through a point from placed ball, with Croke Rovers responding moments later. The pattern continued as O’Connor converted a brace of frees, with Rovers replying in kind, to keep six between the sides. The gap was reduced to five on 49 minutes, with O’Connor again on target to nullify the effort three minutes later. A late surge by Rovers brought them to within four of Emmets, with the game entering the closing stages, but the sharpshooting O’Connor was again on hand to convert his seventh free of the evening, confirming the 0-15 to 0-10 win for the Newmarket and Lismire combination.
