Strong first half showing not enough against Lyre
In what was their second outing in the Duhallow Junior A Football championship, Newmarket feel short against Lyre after a promising first half in Kanturk on Sunday last.
An early TJ Bodie point and a Daniel Culloty hat-trick of scores put Newarket up four points to nil, with ten minutes gone. A seventeenth minute point from Culloty cancelled out Lyre’s opening score, with Bodie extending the lead out to five soon after. The sides traded scores for the remainder of the half, with a Culloty brace handing Newmarket a 0-08 to 0-04 advantage at the short whistle.
Daniel Culloty was on target again early in the second period, but Newmarket would find it difficult to create further scoring opportunities for the remainder of the match. Lyre slowly began to eat away at the five point lead and would only trail by one, with a quarter of the contest remaining. A TJ Bodie free on 47 minutes put two between the sides but Lyre managed to find the necessary scores to tie up the contest on 54 minutes. Another white flag three minutes later pushed them into the front and a final point on the stroke of normal time clinched the 0-10 to 0-12 win for Lyre.
