Strong win against Kanturk
The Junior A hurlers of Newmarket got the better of Kanturk’s second team on Sunday morning last, at a windy Meelin.
The fixture was the second round of the E. Tarrant and Son’s championship, with Newmarket having already drawn with Dromtarriffe and Kanturk losing out to Castlemagner. Despite being underdogs, Kanturk made the most a strong wind and were level at five points a piece at the quarter hour mark, with Newmarket’s scores coming from Darren O’Keeffe, Rory Lynn, Barry O’Connor, Cathal Browne and Mikey Cottrell.
Newmarket began to get a grips with Kanturk from this point onwards and over the next 10 minutes outscored the opposition six to one, through points from Darren O’Keeffe, Barry O’Connor (2), Donal Hannon, Aidan and Cathal Browne. A Ryan O’Keeffe point on 27 minutes was quickly followed up by a Rory Lynn goal, as the full forward made life difficult for a clearing defence, to finish a half chance to the net. Darren O’Keeffe rounded off the scoring for the period to ensure Newmarket held a commanding 1-13 to 0-06 lead at the break.
A brace of Donal Hannon frees opened the second period of the game. A point from Rory Lynn was followed up shortly after by another pair of Hannon scores, with one coming from placed ball. The fixture’s outcome was secured on 40 minutes when Darren O’Keeffe dispatched at shot to the Kanturk net, to push his side 2-18 to 0-07 ahead. A Paddy Browne point preceded a hat-trick of Hannon scores, who was pointing at will in the second half. The closing ten minutes saw Newmarket add another 2-04, with goals from Donal Hannon and Kevin Daly and points from Mikey Browne, Hugh O’Connor, Cathal Browne and Michael Cottrell, to register a convincing 4-26 to 0-12 win. Newmarket now switch attention to Castlemagner in the final round, with three teams in the group still fighting for two semi final places.
