Junior footballers qualify for league final
In a precursor to the upcoming Senior A championship tie between Newmarket and Kiskeam, the side’s Junior A outfits contested the Ducon Cup semi final on Wednesday evening last, the 5th of July.
The teams were rarely separated during the first quarter, with Newmarket taking a 0-03 to 0-02 lead on 16 minutes, with scores from Paudie O’Sullivan, Cathal Browne and TJ Bodie. A further point two minutes later by Bart Daly doubled the lead. Frees from TJ Bodie and Daniel Culloty maintained Newmarket’s strong position, entering the closing stages of the half. Culloty struck again before the break, this time with a goal, giving Newmarket a commanding 1-06 to 0-03 advantage at the interval.
Kiskeam opening the second half with a point in the first minute, with the next score not coming until the 42nd minute when Mikey Browne converted a penalty, to put his side in control. A point a minute later from TJ Bodie handed Newmarket an eight point lead, which the opposition quickly cut in half through an unanswered goal and a point. With only minutes remaining, Kiskeam where handed a lifeline through a 58th minute penalty, which when converted left the narrowest of margins between the teams. A Daniel Culloty point steadied the ship and a late injury time goal from Cathal Browne confirmed Newmarket’s place in the final, after a battling 3-08 to 2-06 encounter at the Ballydesmond venue.
