Footballers overcome Bandon with late push
Newmarket’s senior footballers completed the regular season of the league on Sunday morning with an away win against Bandon and now move on to the final against Kilshannig in a few weeks time.
Having already qualified for the final, the game would not have any material outcome on the table. Despite that, Newmarket were not lacking and ran into a 0-06 to 0-02 lead after 12 minutes through scores from full-forward Hugh O’Connor (4) and wing backs Aidan Browne and Bart Daly. The home side worked their way into the contest and were level on 19 minutes. A tight closing ten minutes saw Newmarket scores from O’Connor (2), Michael Cottrell and Barry O’Connor, giving the visitors a narrow 0-10 to 0-09 advantage at the break.
A 35th minute point from Darren O’Keeffe pushed Newmarket two ahead but three points in as many minutes for the home side, gave them the lead. The teams were level on 42 minutes through Aidan Browne, with TJ Brosnan maintaining parity five minutes later. A burst of points in the closing minutes for Newmarket through Darren O’Keeffe, Michael Cottrell, Hugh O’Connor and Barry O’Connor pushed Newmarket ahead, securing a hard fought 0-17 to 0-14 away win.
