Hurlers continue good form
Newmarket’s Junior hurlers secured their fifth win on the spin on Sunday afternoon when they defeated Millstreet away, 1-18 to 0-13.
A Donal Hannon brace opened the scoring, with team mate Cathal Browne adding to the total soon after. Two further frees from Hannon ensured the away side led 0-05 to 0-02 at the ten minute mark. A quick fire pair of points from Barry O’Connor followed by a Hugh O’Connor score extended the advantage to five at the quarter hour mark. A fifth Hannon strike was followed by a period of dominance from the home side as Millstreet rattled off five unanswered points, drawing level on the 27th minute. A Paddy Browne point just as the half drew to a close, was enough to give his side the narrowest of leads at the break.
Newmarket strengthened their position early in the second half through Cathal Browne, Barry O’Connor and Rory Lynn. A Millstreet brace on 37 minutes reduced the arrears to the three. The visitors replied through Colin O’Sullivan and Josh O’Keeffe, talking full control a few minutes later when Rory Lynn finished a shot to the Millstreet net. A 49th minute point from Donal Hannon and a Lynn score in the closing stages, confirmed an eight point win and the strong start to the league season.
