Late points enough for Kilshannig
Priory Park was the location for the Cork Credit Unions division 4 football clash between table toppers Kilshannig and Newmaket on Sunday morning last.
With both sides having won their opening four fixtures in the campaign, a tight contest was expected. A low scoring opening quarter saw the home side lead by a single point through scores from Ryan O’Keeffe, Barry O’Connor and John Ryan. Two further points from Ryan O’Keeffe, including a well taken 45, helped Newmarket maintain their slender advantage. A Barry O’Connor score from play on 24 minutes extended the lead to two, but the visitors levelled as the half drew to a close. The competitive opening period came to a conclusion when Ryan O’Keeffe converted a free on 29 minutes to restore his side’s narrow 0-07 to 0-06 lead.
The visitors had the better of the proceedings after the break, taking a two point lead on 40 minutes. Despite being reduced to 14 men soon after, they continued to dominate the scoring, doubling their advantage on 45 minutes, a point at which Newmarket were also reduced to 14, due to a black card infringement. A brace of Conor O’Keeffe frees on 52 and 53 minutes cut the deficit in half, with the Kilshannig restoring a three point gap minutes later. Newmarket continued to battle and drew level on the stroke of full time following the expert free-taking of O’Keeffe. The comeback wasn’t to be as Kilshannig found a pair of injury time scores to seal a 0-12 to 0-14 win and hand Newmaket their first defeat of the campaign.
