Early goals prove the difference for footballers

The Newmarket senior footballers travelled to Coachford on Tuesday evening, the 18th of April, in the re-fixed Cork Credit Union’s League 4 tie.

The home side were the first to score and held an early two point lead. Points from corner-forward Ryan O’Keeffe on six and twelve minutes, kept Newmaket in contention. A three minute burst soon after put daylight between the teams, with both Conor O’Keeffe and Barry O’Connor raising the green flag, pushing the visitors 2-02 to 0-03 ahead. Buoyed by the goals, Newmarket strengthened their position over the closing ten minutes of the half. A brace of frees from Conor O’Keeffe and a trio of points, including a 45, from Ryan O’Keeffe, gave the Duhallow side a 2-07 to 0-04 advantage at the break.

While Newmarket opened the second period’s scoring through Darren O’Keeffe, it was the home side who dominated the early exchanges, reducing the gap to just a goal on 45 minutes. The lead was down to two five minutes later. Newmarket recovered their scoring touch in the closing minutes, with a Conor O’Keeffe free and a Ryan O’Keeffe goal confirming the 3-09 to 1-09 win.
