The senior footballers continued their winning start to the league campaign on Friday night, against Mitchelstown in Newmarket.

The tight contest was level for much of the opening exchanges with points from Barry O’Connor (2), Conor O’Keeffe and Darren O’Keeffe maintaining parity with Mitchelstown’s 1-01. Aidan Browne gave Newmarket a brief lead on seven minutes but Mitchelstown pushed ahead 0-06 to 1-05 despite another O’Connor point. Ryan and Darren O’Keeffe points in the closing minutes kept pace with Mitchelstown, who led 0-08 to 1-07 at the short whistle.

A slow start to the second period saw the visitors extend their lead to two by 40 minutes. A Conor O’Keeffe free three minutes later reduced the deficit a goal. The game turned on it’s head seconds later when both David Cottrell and Conor O’Keeffe found the back of the Mitchelstown net, to give Newmarket a 2-09 to 1-09 lead. The advantage was short lived though as Mitchelstown bounced back with a goal of their own moments after. A Ryan O’Keeffe free followed by another from play gave Newmarket a slender 2-11 to 2-10 lead, entering the last ten minutes. Another free, this time from Conor O’Keeffe, doubled the home side’s advantage and the win was confirmed when Barry O’Connor netted Newmarket’s third goal of the evening. The final score read 3-12 to 2-10, with Newmarket maintaining their winning start to the season.
