Hurlers win opener
The Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship got underway for Newmarket on Friday night in Tullylease.
The opposition for the evening, Castlemagner, opened the contest with the first two points of the match. The sides were level soon after through scores from Cathal Browne and Conor O’Keeffe, with O’Keeffe pushing Newmarket into a lead moments later. O’Keeffe was to the fore again on 16 minutes, netting Newmarket’s first goal of the night. Points from Mikey Browne and Jack O’Connor ensured Newmarket held a 1-05 to 0-02 lead entering the last ten minutes of the half. Castlemagner worked their way back into the fixture registering the next two scores, with Newmarket replying with a point from Conor O’Keeffe and their second goal, this time from Cathal Browne. Castlemagner completed the half with the last two scores, narrowing the lead to two goals at the break, 2-06 to 0-06.
Newmarket dominated much of the second half, with a host of scorers extending the advantage. Points from Paddy Browne, Cathal Browne, Conor O’Keeffe, Darren O’Keeffe, Gavin Forde and Barry O’Connor pushed Newmarket into a unassailable position at the 45 minute mark. Further points from Conor O’Keeffe and Kevin O’Sullivan were quickly followed up with Darren O’Keeffe finishing the sliotar to the Castlemagner net. The opposition replied with a pair of points, which were cancelled out by Gavin Forde frees. Castlemagner finished off the afternoon’s scoring with the last point of the match, confirming Newmarket’s 3-19 to 0-09 win.
