Footballers second best to O’Donovan Rossa
Newmarket got their Senior A campaign off to a disappointing start against O’Donovan Rossa on Saturday last.
With the game played in constant rain, the opening exchanges were cagey, both teams maintaining possession for extended periods. Early scores were slow to come by, with O’Donovan Rossa kicking their fourth point on the quarter hour mark to double the lead. The Skibbereen men then began to take hold of the contest and with unerring accuracy, opened up a sizeable 0-03 to 1-11 lead at the break.
Notwithstanding the task ahead, Newmarket began to find some success in the second period, a well worked Cathal Browne goal proving to be a highlight on a difficult afternoon. The Carbery side continued to create opportunities though and held a 1-06 to 3-14 advantage entering the closing 15 minutes. Late scores from both sides concluded the scoring, with O’Donovan Rossa registering a 1-10 to 3-16 victory in a wet Macroom. Newmarket will now switch focus to a matchup against Clyda Rovers on the 12th of August in Kanturk, in an effort to get the season back on track.
