Hurlers overcome Freemount in league

It was a return to winning ways for the Newmarket hurlers in Round 4 of the Twohigs SuperValu Duhallow Junior A league, on Sunday morning, away to Freemount.

There was little between the sides in the first half, with opening scores from Paddy Browne, Darren O’Keeffe and Mikey Browne, keeping pace with the home side. O’Keeffe got his side’s opening goal at the quarter hour stage and despite a further point from corner forward Cathal Browne, the sides were level, 1-04 to 0-07 soon after. A strong closing period from the visitors, with a brace of frees from Gavin Forde, along with 1-01 from Browne, gave their side a 2-07 to 0-10 lead, at the break.

Newmarket replied to early second half scores from the home side, through Cathal and Paddy Browne. A second Cathal Browne goal, five minutes later, put clear daylight between the teams, with the scoreboard displaying 3-09 to 0-13, with twenty minutes remaining. Newmarket dominated the scoring for the remainder of the match, with five Gavin Forde frees and a Tadhg Ryan point from play, confirming a ten point victory for the visitors, 3-15 to 0-14.
