High scoring encounter ends in a draw
Round five of the Cork Credit Unions football league produced an exciting encounter in Newmarket, with the home side sharing 36 scores with Bantry, on a bright Saturday afternoon.
Newmarket got off to the perfect start, with Darren O’Keeffe netting a goal, with barely a minute on the clock. Two scores from Bantry reduced the arrears, with Conor O’Keeffe replying for the hosts. In a sign of things to come, Bantry scored the first of their four goals, to take the lead, for the first time in the contest. The sides were level again through the boot of Darren O’Keeffe and a brace of frees from Daniel Culloty, kept pace with the Bantry scoring. Despite further points from Conor and Darren O’Keeffe, Newmarket found themselves trailing 1-06 to 1-07 on 25 minutes. A late rally from the home side, with four unanswered points, through Paddy Brown, Conor O’Keeffe (2) and Barry O’Connor, saw them enter the dressing rooms with a three point advantage at the break.
Daniel Culloty and Conor O’Keeffe opened Newmarket’s account early in the second half, to extend the lead to 1-12 to 1-08. With Newmarket reduced to 14 players for a black card infringement, the visiting side made strong use of the numerical advantage, scoring three goals in a six minute period, to take control of the match. Back to their full compliment, the hosts began to eat into the lead with scores from Daniel Culloty, Ryan O’Keeffe (2), Conor O’Keeffe and Barry O’Connor, reducing the gap to a single point, 1-17 to 4-09. Entering into the final few minutes, frees from Culloty and O’Connor cancelled out Bantry scores, with Darren O’Keeffe drawing the sides level on 62 minutes. In spite of late chances to find a winner, the entertaining contest finished in a draw, 1-20 to 4-11.
