Browne hat-trick as footballers defeat Lyre
Newmarket travelled to Banteer on Friday night, in search for their first win in the football junior A league.
An early brace from Eddie Allen kept pace with the home side’s scoring, with the teams level after ten minutes. Points from Cathal Browne and full-forward Daniel Culloty, pushed Newmarket ahead, with the first of Browne’s goals ensuring his side held a dominant 1-09 to 0-05 advantage at the break.
The away side kept the pressure on after the resumption, with goal number two for Browne and further points, including scores from Dave Cottrell, Robert Stack and Culloty, pushing the gap beyond Lyre, 2-15 to 0-07. In the closing stages of the contest, Browne finished off his well deserved hat-trick and club stalwart Pa O’Brien netted a goal of his own, shortly after. A late burst from the home side saw them registering 1-01 to complete the evening, with Newmarket securing a much deserved 4-15 to 1-08 win.
