Footballer’s strong second half showing comes up just short
Newmarket senior footballers travelled to Dunmanway on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, to take on Dohenys in Round 2 of the Cork Credit Unions league.
The opening third of the contest was an even affair, as Dohenys led 0-03 to 0-04, with Newmarket points coming from Conor O’Keeffe (2) and Barry O’Connor. The hosts finished the first half strongly though, scoring 1-03 without reply, to command a six point advantage, at the break.
On resumption, Dohenys continued where they left off, registering the next four scores of the match. Despite the 0-03 to 1-10 deficit, Newmarket began to edge their way back into the fixture, with points from Darren O’Keeffe (2), Ryan O’Keeffe and Dave Cottrell. A Barry O’Connor goal mid way through the half narrowed the gap to just three points. A Ryan O’Keeffe score was quickly followed up by the home side, with points from Conor O’Keeffe and Kevin O’Sullivan reducing the arrears to just one. Newmarket came searching for the equalising score, alas it was Dohenys who registered the last point of the game, to hold out to win the entertaining contest, 1-10 to 1-12.
