Footballers go in search of final spot

The Newmarket footballers head to Glantane on Saturday afternoon at 3pm, with a place in the Bon Secours Premier Intermediate Final up for grabs. Talking on Cill Na Matra, for a place in the competition decider, both sides have had differing paths to semi final.

The Muskerry side won all three of their Group B games by comfortable margins, with victories over St. Vincents, Rockchapel and Nemo Rangers. Topping the group, they progressed straight to the semi final spot.

Newmarket, on the other hand, have had a much more colourful championship.  An opening draw against Aghada, followed by defeat to Na Piarsaigh left the team bottom of Group C and facing the competition exit door. A rallying performance in difficult conditions against Castletownbere, resulted in a vital one point win, seeing the side progress to the quarter-finals. It was at this stage they met Group A’s second placed team, Naomh Abán. With the team producing their best outing of the contest, they defeated the Gaeltacht men, 1-16 to 0-10.

Heading into Saturday’s match-up as underdogs, Newmarket have shown great spirit, endeavour and skill, to reach this stage of the competition. Wishing the team and their mentors the very best of luck on Saturday. Áth Trasna Abú!
