On Tuesday, the 13th of July last, Newmarket were on the road to take on Kilbrin in round 2 of the Duhallow Junior B hurling league.

The hosts took an opening lead, only for it to be cancelled out quickly by Cathal Browne. Both sides traded further early scores, with Colin O’Sullivan and Browne, keeping Newmarket within a point of the opposition. With nearly fifteen minutes gone, Kilbrin’s advantage had stretched to two, 0-03 to 0-05, but the remainder of the half belonged to Newmarket. A Gavin Forde free soon after, reduced the margin to one, before a brace from Browne gave his side the lead, a position they would maintain for the rest of the match. With a minute remaining in the half, a Niall Collins point, followed by an injury-time score, again from Browne, left the scoreboard reading 0-08 to 0-05, at the break.

On resumption, three quick Gavin Forde scores from placed ball, gave Newmarket a 0-11 to 0-07 lead after 36 minutes. Kilbrin replied with further points of their own, but a decisive goal by substitute Nicky Barrett on 40 minutes gave his side a five point cushion, entering the last third of the contest. Three additional Forde frees, along with points from Cathal Browne and David Quinlan, meant that the visitors held a 1-16 to 0-12 lead with minutes remaining. Robert Stack completed Newmarket’s scoring, with a late flurry of Kilbrin points, bringing the final totals to 1-17 to 0-15.
