Comeback Footballers, denied top spot at the death
The Premier Intermediate footballers travelled to Ballincollig on Sunday morning, the 4th July, for the final game of the Cork Credit Unions Division 2B round robin series.
With both teams holding a one hundred percent record from their two previous outings, semi final places were already secured, but the matter of top spot in the table was still to be decided.
After a slow start for both sides, Conor and Darren O’Keeffe registered Newmarket’s first scores, giving the visitors a slender 0-02 to 0-01 lead, at the first water break. The second fifteen minutes also provided difficult for scoring, with further points from John Ryan and Ryan O’Keeffe maintaining their side’s one point upper hand, at the short whistle.
After the resumption, the home side found scores easier to come by and lead 0-04 to 0-06 after 40 minutes. They extended their advantage further as the game progressed and with five minutes left on the referee’s watch, they held a 0-04 to 0-10 lead. At this stage, Newmarket’s challenge was re-ignited, when Paudie Allen soloed from deep in his own half to the other end of the field, to blast a great individual goal into the Ballincollig net. With momentum on their side, Bart Daly and Tony O’Keeffe worked the ball through the home side’s defence to reach Timothy Murphy, who coolly finished a low shot to the back of the home goals, levelling up the contest. With time almost up, a Darren O’Keeffe point then put Newmarket into a remarkable lead. Still reeling from the previous five minutes, Ballincollig regrouped and worked an injury time score, to draw the contest 2-05 to 0-11, and secure top spot, on score difference. Both teams now advance to the knockout stages of the competition.
