Intermediates make it two out of two

The Premier Intermediate footballers made it two out of two in the league on Sunday morning last, the 20th of June.

Hosting Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh in the Cork Credit Union’s division 2B fixture, Newmarket got off to an electric start with an early brace from Michael Cottrell, followed by points from Conor O’Keeffe and Barry O’Connor, to lead 0-04 to 0-02 after seven minutes. O’Keeffe scored two further frees, to leave Newmarket up three at the first water break. On the resumption, Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh narrowed the gap with a point, only for it to be cancelled out by Kevin O’Sullivan, a few minutes later. Moments after a Conor O’Keeffe free had put his side up 0-08 to 0-04, Newmarket were rewarded a penalty. Like his brother John a few days earlier against Knocknagree, Alan Ryan coolly finished his shot to the back of the Muskerry side’s net. A late Barry O’Connor point, ensured the home team went in at the break, with a commanding 1-09 to 0-06 lead.

Both teams returned to scoring quickly in the second half, with a pair of Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh points countered by Ryan O’Keeffe, Barry O’Connor, Tim Murphy and a Conor O’Keeffe placed ball. A 40th minute point from Kevin O’Sullivan confirmed the Duhallow men entered the second water break in a strong position. The visitors battled on to narrow the scoreboard to seven points, before a barrage of scores from David Cottrell, Barry O’Connor (2), Michael Cottrell and Cathal Browne gave Newmarket an impressive total of 1-19. With time almost up, Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh scored a late brace to leave the full time score reading 1-19 to 0-12. Next up for Newmarket is a game away to Ballincollig, early next month.
