Junior B Hurlers Bow Out of 2020 County
Newmarket’s Junior B hurlers travelled to Mourneabby on Sunday, the 13th June, to contest the delayed 2020 Junior B County quarter final against Delanys.
In what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, the City side had the brighter of the initial exchanges, scoring 1-04 in the opening ten minutes. In that period Newmarket Paul Verling opened Newmarket’s account, which was later followed by a Tony O’Keeffe score. A Stephen Stokes point narrowed the gap to four points, on 16 minutes. Moments later, Newmarket were awarded a penalty which was expertly dispatched to the Delanys net by Shane McAuliffe, only for it to be stricken off for encroachment, much to the bemusement of his teammates. Newmarket rallied from the disappointment, with two Paul Verling frees, to narrow the Delanys advantage to a goal. The City side followed this up with two late scores of their own, to go in 0-05 to 1-07 up, at the break.
The Seandún side opened the scoring with the first point of the second half, before a 37th minute goal by Niall Collins, brought his side within touching distance of the opposition. From this point forward though, Delanys controlled the scoring, stretching their lead to ten points, as the stopwatch neared 60 minutes. A late free by Shane McAuliffe, followed by an injury time goal for Delanys, left the scoreboard showing 1-06 to 2-15, at full time.
