Opening league win away at Fermoy
The Newmarket Intermediate Footballers got the 2021 campaign up and running, with a fine win away to Fermoy on Monday last, the 7th of June.
The evergreen Kevin O’Sullivan opening the scoring, in what was his team’s first encounter of the year, in the Cork Credit Unions Football League 2B competition. After a low scoring start, the sides traded points before the first water break, with a David Cottrell point, ensuring Newmarket trailed 0-02 to 0-03, at the fifteen minute mark. On resumption, the sides were soon level at four points a piece, with Conor O’Keeffe and John Ryan contributing to the Newmarket scores. Newmarket regained the lead, on twenty five minutes, with a Ryan O’Keeffe score. This was quickly followed by a point from Conor O’Keeffe, ensuring Newmarket lead 0-06 to 0-04, at the break.
Into the second half, Newmarket stretched their lead, with early scores from Ryan and Darren O’Keeffe, going into the second water break 0-08 to 0-05 up. Substitute, Gavin Forde, maintained Newmarket’s three point lead, with a fine score, before Fermoy bounced back to narrow the margin to a single point, with three minutes of normal time remaining. With the match finely balanced, Michael Cottrell all but sealed the result when he raised the green flag, with a great goal, with time almost up. Fermoy rallied with another point, before TJ Bodie rounded off Newmarket’s scoring, to see his side win out, 1-10 to 0-10.
