Return Of The Stack Brothers Not Enough As Newmarket Pipped By Ilen
Two first half goals were key for Ilen as they defeat Newmarket on a score line of Ilen 2-10 V Newmarket 1-12 in the Division 2 football League. The game was played July 28th in Baltimore.
Ilen opening proceedings with a point, which was quickly cancelled out by a TJ Bodie free. The teams continued to trade early scores before Ilen were awarded a penalty. The resulting penalty was rifled to the roof of the net, leaving the Newmarket goalkeeper Shane McAuiliffe with no chance. Ilen lead Newmarket 1-05 to 0-03 after 15 minutes. Another TJ Bodie free drew Newmarket a little closer to their opponents, before the home side broke quickly from their defence and hit another unstoppable shot to the top corner of the Newmarket net. Ilen quickly tagged on another point leaving the scoreboard showing Ilen Rover 2-07 to Newmarket 0-04 at half time.
Newmarket were quickest of the mark in the second half, with early scores coming from Daniel Culloty & TJ Bodie, leaving them trailing Ilen by 6 points with fifteen minutes remaining. Newmarket were thrown a life line on the 50 minute mark when they were awarded a penalty, which was coolly dispatched to the Ilen net by Daniel Culloty. Ilen were struggling to find there rhythm in the second half. With eight minutes remaining, it marked the return of the Stack Brothers Robert and Brendan as Newmarket looked for some final inspiration. Barry O’Connor and Daniel Culloty kicked two late scores for Newmarket, however this wasn’t enough, as the final score showed Ilen Rover 2-10 Newmarket 1-12.
