Newmarket confirm top spot in win over Banteer
Newmarket topped the Duhallow Hurling League with a convincing win league rivals Banteer played in Banteer.
Newmarket started slowly and Banteer registered the first 4 points of the match. Barry O’Connor registered Newmarket’s first point in the 10th minute. 4 minutes later Conor O’Keeffe found the back of net after he rebounded after a few terrific saves from the Banteer keeper. Banteer responded with a point in the 18th minute which was followed by a Conor O’Keeffe score from play and Donal Hannon side line cut. Gavin Forde registered a white flag in the 24 minute which was followed by a Hannon free. Three quick fire points from Banteer ensured that the sides with into the dressing room deadlocked at half time on a score line of 1-05 to 0-08.
Both teams traded points in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. In the 40th minute the sides were level but a defining scoring burst from Newmarket which saw 6 unanswered points in a row. Donal Hannon accounted for 4 points with Conor O’Keeffe and Paudie Allen also registering scores. Banteer fought back with two points of their own but Barry O’Connor, Donal Hannon and Jack Guiney ensured Newmarket left with the spoils and topped the group. A fantastic effort from the players and management throughout as Newmarket now progress to the semi finals.
