Newmarket Advance to Tom Creedon Cup Final

Newmarket Premier Intermediate Footballers recorded a nail biting victory over Mallow last Sunday to advance to the final of the Tom Creedon Cup.

It was Mallow who started this game the more vibrant and led 0-6 points to 0-1 after 10 minutes. The movement and pace of the Mallow attack was causing Newmarket difficulty in the opening period.

The Newmarket began to improve as the half wore on. Daniel Culloty recorded Newmarket opening point and he struck for a goal on the 15th minute. The elusive Barry O’Connor got Newmarket’s next point with a tremendous effort. Bart Daly followed with a 45 and TJ Brosnan also got in on the act as he raised a white flag after a lung busting 60 metre run. Newmarket led by a point 1-04 to 0-06 after 21 minutes after that scoring burst. Mallow responded with a point of there own before Culloty was hand to score a free. The half –time score read Newmarket 1-05 Mallow 0-07.

The second half resumed as the first had ended with Daniel Culloty raising another white flag from a place ball. Barry O’Connor recorded his second point of the game on the 35th minute as Newmarket pushed 3 points clear. Mallow worked there way back into the game with three points in a row to leave the sides level with 15 minutes to play. Bart Daly had a tremendous chance to score a goal however the Mallow goalkeeper made a great save to deny him. In the 46th minute Barry O’Connor bore down on the Mallow goal and he decided to take the safer option and fist over the bar. Tony O’Keeffe and Barry O’Connor again restored Newmarket’s lead to three points with two quick scores inside the 47th minute. Again Mallow mounted a comeback scoring the next three points. The last of which came on the 59th minute meaning the sides were level 1-10 to 0-13 points. Extra time looked inevitable but a nicely worked Newmarket move found its way to Kevin O’Sullivan and he pointed to ensure Newmarket advanced to the Tom Creedon Cup Final.

The final score line read Newmarket 1-11 Mallow 0-13. Newmarket now meet Ballingeary in the final.
