Newmarket Conquer Castlemagner
Newmarket Junior A Hurlers played host to reigning Duhallow champions Castlemagner last Friday evening at Priory Park.
Both teams started sluggishly with the first score coming after a Castlemagner free on the 6th minute. Donal Hannon responded a minute later from a placed ball of his own. Castlemagner scored three points in a row before Donal Hannon responded with a splendid effort from the left hand side line. Again it was Castlemagner who registered the next two scores to leave a margin of 0-6 to 0-2 in favour of Castlemagner after 20 minutes. Barry O’Connor replied for Newmarket’s third point of the day after a rampaging run through the Castlemagner defence. Both teams traded points before the interval with Donal Hannon on target again for Newmarket. The half time score read Newmarket 0-4 Castlemagner 0-7.
Newmarket started the second half at a furious pace. Straight from the thrown in, Newmarket debutant and former Carrickshock (Kilkenny) hurler Niall Rohan scooped up a breaking ball and delivered it to Colin O’Sullivan who with the help of a deflection raised a green flag. Newmarket scored the next 5 points without reply with Donal Hannon registering 4 of those and Niall Rohan accounting for the other. Castlemagner registered their only score of the second half on the 46th minute when 21 yard free was blazed over the crossbar. Conor O’Keeffe, Niall Rohan and Donal Hannon raised white flags in the last 10 minutes of the game to insure victory. The final score line read Newmarket 1-12 Castlemagner 0-8.
