Newmarket Junior A Hurlers lost out to a last minute goal to Freemount last Sunday in what was a pulsating tussle.

The game was played on a beautiful spring afternoon; however under foot conditions were extremely difficult.

Newmarket started brightly with Ryan O’Keeffe and Gavin Forde opening the scoring for Newmarket. Newmarket through jack Guiney traded points with Freemount as Ryan O’Keeffe and Gavin Forde were on hand again to raise the white flag. Newmarket led 0-6 to 0-3 after ten minutes. Freemount responded with the next score which was followed by a Mike Kenneally point. Both teams traded scores with Gavin Forde unerring from placed balls and Mike Kenneally working tirelessly to block down a Freemount defender and split the posts. Jack Guiney recorded Newmarket’s final score of the half as Freemount replied with a score of their own. Newmarket led 0-10 to 0-06 at the interval

Both teams traded scores on resumption of the second half as Mike Kenneally responded to a Freemount point. On the 37th minute Freemount registered their first goal of the afternoon as their sharpshooter Aidan O’Flynn scored from an acute angle past Newmarket goalkeeper Shane McAuliffe, Newmarket responded positively through Gavin Forde and Colin O’Sullivan before O’Flynn found space in the Newmarket defence and shot to the net again to register his and Freemount’s second goal. Again Newmarket responded though Gavin Forde and Paudie Allen who scored two identical long range efforts. A Jack Guiney point sandwiched two Freemount points as Newmarket led by a solitary point with time up. Barry O’Connor fired over a point which looked to seal victory but Freemount were afforded one last attack. A long delivery found its way to a Freemount attacker who rifled a shot into the top corner of the net to claim victory. The final score line read Newmarket 0-18 Freemount 3-10
