Eire Óg too strong for Newmarket
Newmarket Premier Intermediate Footballers fell to their first defeat of the season against a very strong Eire Óg side.
The Ovens side started brightly and lead 1-3 to 0-1 point after 15 mins with Conor 0’Keeffe registering Newmarket’s only score. The Newmarket defence was under enormous pressure in this period which included a fantastic penalty save by Shane McAuliffe from Cork Senior footballer Daniel Goulding. Newmarket, like the previous week against Fermoy began to improve ten minutes before half time as Barry O’Connor was wrestled to the ground inside the penalty area. Alan Ryan stepped up to take the penalty kick and slotted confidently into the bottom left hand corner. A further point from Daniel Culloty left Newmarket trailing by two points at half time on a score line of 1-4 to 1-2.
Eire Óg started the second half extremely well and raced into a 1-8 to 1-4 lead with further points from Daniel Culloty keeping Newmarket within touching distance. A further scoring burst from Eire Óg lead by former Cork U-21 Kevin Hallisey left Newmarket trailing 1-14 and 1-4 with 5 mins to go. Newmarket did not go down without a fight however as Conor O’Keeffe finished superbly to the back of the Eire Óg net. Further points from O’Keeffe and Culloty were in vain as the Eire Óg lead proved to be insurmountable.
The final score line read Eire Óg 1-15 Newmarket 2-07
