Newmarket Start 2016 League Campaign with win
Newmarket started their 2016 Division 2 league campaign with a trip to newly crowned county intermediate champions Fermoy. Down several key players through injury, Newmarket were boosted by the return of Bart Daly who was on reprieve from Cork Senior Football duties.
Newmarket started brightly through Conor O’Keeffe, who scored the first point of the game after 3 minutes. However after 21 minutes the scoreboard read Fermoy 2-03 Newmarket 0-2. An Important phase of the match occurred just before half-time, Newmarket looking dead and buried spurred into life as Bart Daly surged through the Fermoy defence to blast the ball to the back of the net, a further point from Daly and two monstrous points from Daniel Culloty had Newmarket in arrears by 1 point at half time in a score line of 2-3 to 1-5.
The second half began with both teams trading points with Conor O’Keeffe and Paudie Allen on target for Newmarket. The crucial score of the second half came in the 45th minute when Conor O’Keeffe latched onto a long delivery and weaved through the full back line of Fermoy to finish calmly past the keeper to put Newmarket back in front 2-07 to 2-05. Culloty and O’Keeffe kicked further points in the closing stages in response to two points from Fermoy. A fantastic save by goalkeeper Shane McAuliffe at the death ensured Newmarket left Fermoy with two league points . The final score read Newmarket 2-09 Fermoy 2-07.
