Under 21 Footballers advance to next round of Invitational Cup
Robert Emmets under 21 football team got the playing season off to a great start when they recorded a 3-13 to 1-6 victory over Rathmore, played under floodlights in testing conditions on Saturday evening in Rathmore.
Emmets got of a good start and were 4-2 up after 15mins thanks to points by Culloty and O’ Connor, with Mikey Cottrell also getting in on the act with a point from distance. It took Newmarket awhile to get to grips with Rathmores aerial dominance but as the half wore on it provided them with a good platform for attack. Rathmore continued to threaten the Emmets defence but they held firm thanks to the efforts of the impressive Tadhg Ryan, Jamie Hayes and captain Paudie Allen, ably assisted by newcomer Aidan Browne at wing back and Jack Guiney in the corner. Emmets finished the half with a well taken goal by Barry O’ Connor after good work by Hannon and a neat one two with debutant Ryan O’ Keeffe to leave the score 1-6 to 0-4 at half time.
Robert Emmets began the half as they finished the first with some well taken points by Jonathan Flaherty and Alan Ryan. And after a prolonged period of possession O’ Connor struck for another goal after excellent work by Flaherty and Hannon, with the latter chipping in with a fine point after a good solo run. Rathmore threatened and scored a goal of there own after some confusion in the Emmets full back line, however Emmets rallied and scored a rather fortuitous 3rd goal of there own after Tadhg Ryans long range effort ended up finding the net. With the game entering the final stages Rathmore kept pushing forward but fine defensive work by substitute Daniel Norton and the hard-working Gavin Forde helped keep the opposition at bay. Robert Emmets now await the results of other fixtures before learning who their next opponents will be.
