Junior B footballers back to winning ways
Newmarket got the better of St. Johns, 1-14 to 0-12 in a keenly contested junior B football league game played at Newmarket last Friday evening.
The decisive score of the game was a first half Newmarket goal scored by Daniel Culloty. Newmarket played with the aid of a strong breeze and hit a succession of points through Daniel Culloty, Pa O’Brien, Jonathan Flaherty, Eddie Allen and Robert Stack. St Johns finished the half well and the half concluded with Newmarket enjoying a lead of 1-10 to 0-7.
St Johns quickly brought themselves into contention as by the seventh minute of the second half, they cut the arrears to 1-11 to 0-11. A Daniel Culloty free and Pa O’Brien with his third point of the evening gave Newmarket a five point lead as the game entered the final quarter. St. Johns poured forward but all they could add to the scoreboard was a single point. Newmarket received a great boost when T.J. Bodie entered the fray to make a long awaited appearance following a long term injury and was very involved in the action for the remainder of the game. Steven Stokes found himself in an advanced position to kick an insurance point late in the game to confirm Newmarket’s second victory of the campaign from three outings.
