Andy’s Archives…Newmarket in the county championship
When Bart Daly leads Newmarket against Kiskeam in next Sundays county premier intermediate football championship, it will mark the 21st year that the men in black and red will play in this championship.
It all began on May 16th 1971 in Castletownroche. That day 43 years ago they drew with Cobh, 2-10 to 2-10.

In the replay at Glantane on June 20th Cobh won 2-11 to 0-10.

This was the team that had brought a historic first county junior title to the club in December 13th 1970. Sadly 3 members are nolonger with us, Jimmy Cullotty, Padraigh Feehin, and Donal O’Gorman. We will never forget them.
Newmarket played county junior football championship games, in 1927, 1949/50, 1965, 1968/70, 1993, and 1998.
Did you know…Tony O’Keeffe and Denis O’Brien are the only players to represent the club in county football championship games at, Junior A, Intermediate and Senior.
Tony O’Keeffe will play in his 63rd football championship game, thus equaling Denis O’Brien and Danny Culloty and just 2 behind the record 65 set by Michael Cottrell.

Did you know…
Newmarket played in 1897 county senior championship, again in 1899 ,1901, 1928, 2012/13.
Played in 1927 County Junior Final, when they lost to urhan.
Won their first duhallow junior title in 1949.
Defeated in 1950 county junior final in a replay by Canovee.
Played in 1931 county minor final losing out to Lough Rovers.
Duhallow champions again in 1965, when captained by the great Ted Feehin, this side were narrow losers to Na Piarsaighs in county championship.
County champions 1970 under the captaincy of one of the greats in Billy Daly.
Duhallow champions again in 1993 ,captained by the great Danny Cullotty, unforgettable scenes of joy at Banteer as a 23 year wait ends.
County champions again in 1998 with JP O’Neill as captain ,and then in 2011 the greatest victory of them all, a county premier intermediate title, with great dual star Barry O’Leary as captain.
