Newmarket advance in Junior B football
Newmarket recorded an impressive victory over Dromtariffe by 4-15 to 3-7 in a high scoring junior B football championship game played at Boherbue on Monday evening.
Dromtariffe were first on the scoreboard on pointing through a third minute free. Newmarket gained parity moments later as Shane Murphy surged through the middle before firing over a point.
Dromtariffe regained the lead but impressive full forward Robert Stack showed great endeavour before kicking a second equalizer in the ninth minute. Newmarket took the lead on Kevin O’Connor kicking a point but Dromtariffe ensured parity for a third time, midway through the half.
Newmarket began to gain an upper hand at this stage and this was confirmed on Ian Flanagan embarking on an impressive solo run, through the defence, before firing a piledriver of a shot which crashed off the crossbar but landed over the line, for the games opening goal.
Shane Murphy and Luke McCarthy added well taken points to stretch the lead to five points. Dromtariffe recovered and a probing solo run ended with a goal in the twenty fifth minute. Newmarket were now playing with style and confidence, epitomised by an outstanding display from half back Alan Ryan.
They finished the half in the ascendency after a superbly worked move involving Gavin Forde, Robert Stack and Luke McCarthy ended with Kevin O’Connor receiving a pinpoint pass and unleashing a spectacular shot to the roof of the net from thirteen yards. Shane Murphy added to his increasing tally while a Dromtariffe point meant Newmarket entered the half time break with a lead of 2-6 to 1-4.
Newmarket resumed in impressive manner. Gavin Forde and Niall O’Connor pointed impressively within two minutes of the restart. Newmarket maintained their fine form and a succession of excellent scores from Shane Murphy, Kevin O’Connor, Ian Flanagan and Robert Stack reflected a fine team effort on the scoreboard. They ended an emphatic third quarter with two goals within a minute. Robert Stack fired home from close range while Luke McCarthy repeated the feat as excellent approach play carved out several opportunites.
A superb third quarter yielded two goals and seven points without reply, a stunning effort from a side in full flow. Dromtariffe contributed to a hugely entertaining game as they hit back with a goal and a point. Robert Stack and John Scanlon knocked over a further two points to confirm Newmarket’s stronghold on proceedings.
A battling Dromtariffe enjoyed a productive final ten minutes and they found the net for a third time from the penalty spot before adding two final points before the conclusion of a prolific encounter.
