First league win for seniors

Newmarket’s senior football team recorded their first league success of the season, following a fine victory against Dohenys by 2-10 to 0-8 at sun drenched Newmarket on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides had to adapt to the warm conditions and it was Dohenys who eventually opened the scoring on converting a forty five in the sixth minute. The visitors dominated the territorial exchanges in the early minutes and added to their tally on pointing an eighth minute free.

Newmarket eventually got a grip on possession and were boosted in the tenth minute. The industrious Kevin O’Sullivan flighted an inviting ball dangerously towards the goalmouth and Michael Cottrell rose to apply the necessary touch and divert it to the back of the net. Nicky Flanagan pointed Newmarket’s first point from a free in the thirteenth minute but Dohenys replied instantly by similar means.

Scores were at a premium in the first half despite the endeavours of both sets of players. Newmarket grew in confidence as the game progressed and they added to the scoreboard when an exquisite pass from the impressive Daniel Culloty expertly found Nicky Flanagan in space, and the corner forward applied the finish for a fine point.

Daniel Culloty was again instrumental to the next score as he fielded brilliantly and set a move in motion which ended with John Ryan landing a monstrous point from distance. Dohenys added the final point of the half which left Newmarket with a lead of 1-3 to 0-4 at the turnover.

Newmarket resumed brightly and within two minutes Nicky Flanagan converted a close in free following a foul on Daniel Culloty. Moments later, John Lane showed some fine individual skill before adding an inspirational long range point from a difficult angle.

In the fifth minute a second goal followed. John Lane again did superbly out by the sideline and racing in on goal placed a wonderful pass towards Michael Cottrell and once more, the full forward showed sublime skill and composure before flashing an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. Despite a Dohenys point in the eleventh minute, Newmarket were in complete control and went on to play some excellent football.

Midfielder Kevin O’Sullivan kicked two outstanding points from virtually the same position out on the wing and by the end of the third quarter, Newmarket held a lead of 2-7 to 0-5. T.J. Brosnan was rewarded for his driving forward runs on pointing as the game entered the final ten minutes. Michael Kenneally showed great tenacity in the build up to a fine individual score. Dohenys provided a late rally that yielded three points but Newmarket confirmed the win with another trademark T.J. Brosnan point as he finished expertly, completing a good day for the home side.
