Culloty makes his mark

A strong second half showing enabled Robert Emmets to overturn a half time deficit of two points to run out victors by 0-14 to 1-6 against Dromtariffe at a chilly Tullylease on Saturday evening . A tally of nine points, some of sublime quality from full forward Daniel Culloty proved central to the outcome.

Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze, Dromtariffe pointed a free in the fourth minute, despite Robert Emmets having several earlier scoring opportunities which went abegging. A Daniel Culloty free tied the sides after seven minutes but three points by the midway stage of the first half pushed Dromtariffe in front.

Daniel Culloty found the target with a well executed point in the eighteenth minute but a Robert Emmets rearguard which endured a period of Dromtariffe pressure fouled to concede a penalty. The resultant kick was dispatched to the net as Dromtariffe stretched their advantage to five points after twenty one minutes of play.

Robert Emmets recovered to finish the half strongly. Cathal Noonan added two stylish points in quick succession and a Daniel Culloty free left the half time score reading 1-4 to 0-5 in favour of Dromtariffe.

Upon the restart, T.J. Brosnan showed his class with a super point within three minutes and then supplied possession to Daniel Culloty who tied the scores with a point, five minutes into the half.

The momentum was now with Robert Emmets and they hit the front for the first time, eight minutes into the second half with Daniel Culloty on target for a fifth time. The industrious Michael McSweeney was prominent throughout and his tireless work rate set Jonathan Flaherty on a run goalwards which ended with a fierce shot which grazed over the crossbar.

Dromtariffe had their first point of the half by the end of the third quarter, which left the minimum of margins between the sides, 0-9 to 1-5 entering the closing minutes. Robert Emmets aided by the elements showed the necessary desire to push on, with Padraig Allen and T.J. Brosnan to the fore around the middle of the field.

The midfielder added his second point of the half before Daniel Culloty produced a moment of magic to bisect the posts. A Dromtariffe point left two points between the teams with six minutes to play. Robert Emmets, as in the first half, ended the half strongly where in attack the prolific Daniel Culloty added the finishing touches. The full forward converted two more frees before he concluded an outstanding display with another excellent point.

Robert Emmets now progress to the final where they will meet Boherbue in a repeat of last years decider.
