Stunning display from keeper McAuliffe

Newmarket’s minor hurlers recorded a fine home league victory over Dromtariffe by 2-14 to 1-9 on Monday evening.

Dromtariffe pointed from a free within the opening minute but Newmarket hit back instantly. On being awarded a twenty yard free, Donal Hannon stepped up to drill a bullet of a shot to the net past a packed goalline. Two points had Dromtariffe level by the seventh minute. Newmarket added their first point of the evening when Barry O’Connor found Jonathan Flaherty who powered forward to execute a well taken score.

In the ninth minute, Newmarket were awarded another close in free and once more Donal Hannon made light of the marshalled goal to again deliver a bullet of a strike to the back of the net. Newmarket were in full flow as Jonathan Flaherty and Barry O’Connor raised further white flags.

Dromtariffe replied with two points and midway through the half, Newmarket enjoyed a 2-3 to 0-5 advantage. Newmarket’s goalkeeper Shane McAuliffe was in outstanding form, in particular pulling off three memorable saves, the first coming in the twenty first minute. The backs were hurling well as a unit while up front talisman Donal Hannon together with Jonathan Flaherty and Barry O’Connor kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely. Donal Hannon added two points to restore a two goal lead.

As the half concluded the sides exchanged points with Barry O’Connor’s second point leaving the score in favour of Newmarket, 2-6 to 0-6 at half time.

As in the first half, Dromtariffe were on target within a minute of the throw in. Newmarket replied with two converted placed balls from both Donal Hannon and Gavin Forde. At this stage Shane McAuliffe was called into action to produce another stunning stop to keep his goal intact while Newmarket added to their lead through Barry O’Connor and Donal Hannon. Dromtariffe pointed next, but Jonathan Flaherty gave Newmarket a lead of 2-11 to 0-8 after the third quarter. Newmarket were denied a third goal as a penalty was superbly blocked by the Dromtariffe goalkeeper but the home side added another point through Donal Hannon.

The visitors eventually found a way past Shane McAuliffe for a goal before he went on to make his third spectacular save of the night. Newmarket went on to seal the win as Donal Hannon and Barry O’Connor added to their respective tallies. Dromtariffe did score the final point but Newmarket were impressive in claiming a second league win from three outings.
