The recently formed and amalgamated under 21 team Robert Emmets got off to a flying start with a fine championship victory over St. Peters by 2-12 to 0-6 at a sunny Newmarket on Saturday afternoon.
On a soft, grassy surface, the Newmarket/Lismire combination began brightly when Cathal Noonan pointed in the fifth minute. Matters improved five minutes later when the home side reacted smartly to a dropping ball into the square and Brian O’Callaghan rifled a shot to the roof of the St. Peters net. Eddie Allen added a brace of neatly taken points as Emmets established a six point advantage midway through the half. Jonathan Flaherty pointed in style from distance before St. Peters opened their account in the twentieth minute. Daniel Culloty pointed spectacularly before points from Cathal Noonan and Jonathan Flaherty ensured an advantage of 1-7 to 0-1 at the halfway mark.
The second half resumed with T.J. Brosnan on target with a well struck free after seven minutes. St. Peters pointed next before Daniel Culloty reeled off a trio of points with two superbly executed scores from play a particular highlight. St. Peters had the next two points but T.J. Brosnan crashed an unstoppable shot to the net for a second goal and a comprehensive advantage.
