Minors continue winning ways

Newmarket’s minor footballers maintained their winning start to the new league campaign on recording a second successive victory by 0-10 to 1-4 away to Kildorrery on Sunday afternoon.

Heavy underground conditions proved difficult but Newmarket found the target in the third minute when Peter Lynch pointed after some well worked build up play. Jonathan Flaherty reacted fastest to a breaking ball twenty yards from goal and pounced for a second point after five minutes. Newmarket stretched their lead when Paudie Allen set off on one of several probing solo runs which ended with Barry O’Connor neatly taking his first point of the contest. Newmarket suffered a setback midway through the half with the home side winning a penalty which was slotted to the net for an equalizing goal. Newmarket replied with Daniel Culloty kicking an exquisite point from a difficult angle and the accuracy of Barry O’Connor ensured Newmarket turned over at the interval with a lead of 0-5 to 1-0.

Kildorrery pointed for the first time six minutes after the resumption to leave just a point between the sides. Newmarket were grateful to some fine displays in defence for keeping their lead intact with Donal Hannon outstanding throughout, and Padraig Allen and Alan Ryan also prominent with some excellent displays. A wonderfully executed point from distance by Gavin Forde settled the Newmarket side and Michael Cottrell was on hand to kick another point at the end of the third quarter after an excellent solo run from Paudie Allen. Kildorrery scored the next point but Barry O’Connor kept his composure to kick his third point and restore a three point margin. The home side swept over two points in as many minutes as just a solitary point separated the teams with six minutes remaining. To their credit the Newmarket team to a man finished in fine fashion and took control when most required. Gavin Forde rewarded the teamwork with two magnificent points to confirm a well earned three point victory.
