Newmarket progress in minor Championship
Newmarket’s minor footballers progressed past the first round of the North Cork minor A football championship with an impressive win over Glanworth by 2-14 to 1-5 at Buttevant on Monday evening last in a game played in perfect conditions.
Newmarket got off to the perfect start when corner forward Nicky Barrett finished clinically for a fine point within the first minute. Three minutes later the game swung in the favour of Glanworth when they surged through what proved to be a most resolute defence for a well taken goal and quickly followed with a point. Newmarket recovered from this setback and despite kicking a succession of wides throughout the encounter, they found their way back into the contest on being awarded a penalty in the eleventh minute. Impressive midfielder T.J. Brosnan stepped forward and dispatched the spot kick to the net despite the best efforts of the Glanworth goalkeeper to level the scores.
Midway through the half T.J. Brosnan kicked a sublime point with his left boot with Glanworth answering with a point of their own in their next attack. At this stage of the game, Newmarket began to take control and they settled after scoring a well taken goal in the twenty third minute. A quickly taken free by T.J. Brosnan found Barry O’Connor in an advanced position and he offloaded to Luke McCarthy who buried the ball to the back of the net. Points followed from the influential Gavin Forde and a Luke McCarthy free before Glanworth scored their final point of the half. Newmarket completed the scoring with Nicky Barrett pointing for a second time giving them a lead of 2-5 to 1-3 at the turnover.
Newmarket flew out of the traps as the game resumed with Patrick Kelly surging forward and passing on to T.J. Brosnan who found the target with another spectacular point from distance within seconds of the restart. Barry O’Connor and Gavin Forde increased the lead before Glanworth replied with a point. Newmarket proceeded to dominate and points by Gavin Forde and T.J. Brosnan gave them a commanding 2-10 to 1-4 advantage at the three quarter mark. Newmarket maintained their level of performance for the remainder of the game with a number of excellent individual displays throughout the team. They built on their lead through points by Daniel Culloty, Nicky Barrett and Gavin Forde before Nicky Barrett ended the game as it began with a point in the closing moments.
