Newmarket maintain fine start to minor football league
Newmarket maintained their fine start to the minor football league with a second successive victory over Pobal Ui Chaoimh at Ballydesmond on Wednesday night by 3-10 to 1-7.
Newmarket played with the assistance of a very strong breeze in the first half and got off the mark in the second minute when Gavin Forde kicked a superb point from close to the sideline. Despite the notable advantage, Newmarket struggled to add on further scores but a well taken free by T.J. Brosnan and a point from Barry O’Connor had a three point lead established by the fourteenth minute. The advantage doubled on a fine move involving Barry O’Connor and Nicky Barrett placing Luke McCarthy in on goal and he lashed the ball to the roof of the net from close range. Points followed from T.J. Brosnan and Gavin Forde as a sizeable eight point lead separated the sides. Pobal Ui Chaoimh ended the half with two quickfire points which left the scoreline reading 1-5 to 0-2 at half time.
As the game unfolded, it transpired that Newmarket performed better in the second half when they played against the elements. T.J. Brosnan drilled over a pointed free within two minutes which was immediately answered with a point to the home side. Crucially the next score of the game was a second Newmarket goal. A rampaging solo run from full back Jamie Hayes saw his long delivery flicked on by Vinny Molloy into the path of the on rushing Barry O’Connor and as he closed in on goal he produced a stunning finish to the top of the net. This gained Newmarket further impetus and points were added by T.J. Brosnan and Nicky Barrett before the third quarter ended with Vinny Molloy crashing in a third goal from close range and an emphatic lead for Newmarket. Pobal Ui Chaoimh responded with a goal and a point before Barry O’Connor chipped in with another Newmarket point. The home side added three points in the closing ten minutes with Vinny Molloy on the scoresheet for Newmarket as they closed out a fine victory.
