Minors play out entertaining draw against Kiskeam
Newmarket’s minor football team played out an entertaining draw against Kiskeam, in a league game played at the latter’s venue on Monday evening, the sides finishing tied on 2-9 apiece.
After the initial settling down period it was Kiskeam who had the first score of the evening in the sixth minute. Vinny Molloy had the sides on terms in the ninth minute before Newmarket’s influential midfielder T.J. Brosnan got forward to kick his first point of the game. Newmarket built on a solid start and further points followed through Timmy O’Keeffe and Vinny Molloy. Newmarket impressed for most of the half but failed to build on this on the scoreboard. The home side gained a grip on proceedings in the latter stages of the half and finished it very strongly. Two points followed before a converted penalty in the twenty ninth minute, regained Kiskeam the lead. They added another two points before half time and Newmarket looked quite happy to hear the whistle as despite their endeavours, Newmarket turned around trailing by 1-5 to 0-4.
Newmarket regained their composure upon the restart and received a major tonic in the fourth minute when a well worked move ended with Vinny Molloy reigning in on goal and he finished clinically to the net. Two minutes later a point from T.J. Brosnan had the sides level for the second time of the night. Newmarket fashioned another excellent goal two minutes later as Nicky Barrett applied the finish in fine style to the net and once more T.J. Brosnan followed up with a point and suddenly Newmarket had a four point advantage.
However, Newmarket’s lead was cut within a minute as Kiskeam hit back with their second goal of the game. The contest flowed from end to end as the sides exchanged points, the excellent Timmy O’Keeffe pointing for Newmarket. Luke McCarthy pointed to give Newmarket a two point lead with seven minutes remaining. Kiskeam gained the impetus at this stage and two points had the sides level late in the game. Kiskeam pointed again to seemingly edge the contest but in the closing moments of the game, Timmy O’Keeffe grabbed an equalizing point with a fine effort to share the spoils at 2-9 apiece.
