Newmarket suffer defeat in Ducon Cup

The Newmarket Juniors lost in their third game of the Ducon Cup Group 2 away to Kiskeam on a score line of 4-8 to 1-12.

Kiskeam started the scoring with two points in the first 5 minutes. Seanie Francis O’ Connor replied for Newmarket but Kiskeam looked to be moving with more freedom and they quickly added another goal and a point leaving it 1-3 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Newmarket’s John Cronin replied in the best way possible with a neat finish to the net with the fist and a Shane Murphy point but this led to a Kiskeam onslaught. The home side went on to score 2-3 in the next fifteen minutes with Newmarket looking dead on their feet only scoring a solitary point through T.J. Brosnan in this period. Kiskeam leading 3-5 to 1-3 after 25 minutes of play. Newmarket finally started to play and finished the half with four points on the trot, two points apiece to John Cronin and Shane Murphy. The score line at the interval was 3-5 to 1-7.

The second half began disastrously for Newmarket when Kiskeam scored another goal and a point, Kiskeam’s fourth goal of the night leaving it 4-6 to 1-7 five minutes into the second half. Newmarket took control of the game after this but failed to make a real impact on the scoreboard. Shane Murphy popped over four points from placed balls leaving it 4-6 to 1-11 after 50 minutes. Scores were hard to come by for the final ten minutes as Newmarket struggled to break the Kiskeam rearguard. After a lot of pressure on the Kiskeam defence it was in fact the home side that scored the next two points in the final two minutes of the game. Robert Stack scored what was only a consolation point for Newmarket in added time leaving the final score 4-8 to 1-12 in a disappointing and frustrating night for the Newmarket Juniors.
