Newmarket defeated by Grenagh in intermediate football league

Newmarket were defeated by Grenagh in the intermediate football league game played in splendid sunshine at Mallow on Sunday afternoon on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-9.

Newmarket were quick off the mark and their first attack yielded an excellent point from Tony O’Keeffe in the very first minute. Grenagh tied up matters in the seventh minute before some sloppy defending gifted Grenagh the games only goal a minute later. Grenagh increased their advantage by another point before Kevin O’Sullivan surged forward to kick Newmarket’s second score. The sides exchanged points as Tony O’Keeffe found the target for a second time. The next four points were shared as Bart Daly twice executed two superbly taken forty fives. A John Ryan point late in the half left Newmarket trailing by 1-5 to 0-6 at the turnover.

Grenagh dominated long periods of the second half and they added four unanswered points in the third quarter. Newmarket eventually pointed through a T.J. Bodie free Grenagh restored a six point lead before David O’Flynn scored a fine individual point for Newmarket. Two further points were shared before the finish as T.J. Bodie claimed the last score of the game but this game had all the hallmark of an end of season contest.
