Newmarket denied victory with late goal
A goal from a free with the final puck of the match denied Newmarket victory in their second junior B hurling league game against Kilbrin played at Newmarket on Wednesday evening, the contest ending 1-15 apiece.
Seán Irwin pointed in the first minute but Kilbrin struck back with three points. Shane Murphy converted a free as the sides then exchanged points. Newmarket gained parity in an entertaining game through points from Donnacha O’Dea and Shane Murphy but Kilbrin regained the lead with two further points. The next six points were divided as Shane Murphy twice and Donnacha O’Dea were on target for Newmarket. The home side gained the upper hand when awarded a penalty and the upended Shane Murphy stood up to convert for a Newmarket goal. Two further points were divided as Bryan O’Connell ensured Newmarket enjoyed a slender advantage at the turnover, 1-8 to 0-10.
Kilbrin tied proceedings five minutes after the restart but two points from the prolific Shane Murphy and another from Seán Irwin gave Newmarket a three point advantage. Kilbrin gained terms again by adding the next three points and the sides remained deadlocked after sharing two points with Donnacha O’Dea adding his third of the evening. Newmarket gained momentum and were rewarded on points from Robert Stack and two fine scores from substitute Liam Murphy. A resolute defence with Brendan Stack, John McSweeney, Billy Daly and Donnacha Fitzpatrick impressive throughout, were dealt a blow right at the death when Kilbrin found the net from a free despite a mass of Newmarket player lining the goals and they had to settle for a share of the points.
