Newmarket suffered defeat to Kanturk in the Ducon Cup
Newmarket suffered defeat to Kanturk in the Ducon Cup at Kanturk on Friday evening by 1-16 to 0-7.
Newmarket struggled in the opening half and despite some good displays in defence, sloppy passing and shooting were the sides downfall as Kanturk capitalised. In the first quarter Kanturk scored four points and the games only goal in the seventeenth minute gave them a substantial advantage. Four more points followed before Newmarket eventually got off the mark thanks to Jerry McCarthy late in the half. The impressive John Scanlon quickly added a second as the half ended 1-9 to 0-2.
Newmarket improved in the second half with Robert Stack and Shane Murphy pointing in the third quarter at which stage Kanturk enjoyed a twelve point advantage. Maurice Feehan and Shane Murphy scored successive points but Kanturk found the target with three points of their own. Timothy Murphy added the final score at the death but it proved mere consolation for Newmarket.
