U16 Football – Newmarket V’s Millstreet – Monday 6th April
The Newmarket U16 footballers played their last league game before the exam break on Monday 6th April against the much fancied Millstreet team.
From the start Newmarket seemed to hold most of the possession and TJ Brosnan took a point in the second minute but thereafter failed to make any impression on the scoreboard. Newmarket were wasteful with a number of chances caused mainly by pressure from the Millstreet backs. Once Millstreet got to grips with the game after about ten minutes they made no such mistake scoring 1 – 4 in the space of 15 minutes. The Newmarket forwards where under pressure whenever the ball got up to that end of the field and two first half substitutions seemed to steady the team a little, however still no scores where forthcoming. Things where not looking good for Newmarket with the half time score reading 0- 1 to 1 – 4 to Millstreet.
There must have been some stern words at half time as the Newmarket team in the second half stepped up a gear or two and played with determination and passion throughout. Millstreet however forged ahead with two quick points.
However the Newmarket boys continued with their efforts and the scores started to come. TJ Brosnan notched up two points before Luke McCarty scored after 47 minutes. With the scoreline reading 1 – 6 to 0 – 4 Newmarket scored the goal they so rightly deserved. David Enright slotting home on 52 minutes. This resurgence was continued with further points from David Enright and TJ Brosnan, Millstreet however managed a further point in the 50th minute to keep the scores apart by 2 points.
In the 55th minute TJ Brosnan scored another point to put just one between the teams, with time running out Daniel Culloty scored an excellent point from a tight angle to equalise in the 57th minute, this was followed by a further Luke McCarthy point, this score coming from an excellent one handed catch by Jacko Flaherty, this put Newmarket ahead by the narrowest of margins. Then in the last minute Millstreet were awarded a 21 yard free in front of the posts which was hit wide. The Referee then blew his final whistle and Newmarket had won the day playing with great pride and determination.
Final Score 1 – 8 to 1 – 7. With three wins from three matches the Newmarket boys confidence is now running high. It is a pity the exam break is due with the momentum they have built up over the last number of weeks. Well done to all the players they deserve our congratulations on a job well done the club and the town can be proud of there efforts to date.
