Juniors suffer heavy defeat
Newmarket travelled to Banteer on Saturday evening to take on Lyre in the Ducon Cup and despite a good first half performance, Newmarket ended the hour on the receiving end of a heavy defeat, 0-18 to 0-4.
Newmarket were quick off the mark when Michael Kenneally raced forward from his wing back position to kick an excellent point in the first minute. Lyre settled and hit five points in succession. Newmarket had their second score when the impressive John Scanlon kicked a point in the seventeenth minute. Lyre added three further points but Newmarket finished the half well and points from Brian O’Riordan and Shane Anthony Murphy reduced the arrears to four points, 0-8 to 0-4 at the halfway mark.
The third quarter produced few scoring opportunities but it was the home side who added two further points. In the final quarter Lyre were ruthless in the manner they chalked up an array of fine scores. Newmarket looked tired and deflated but the home side pressed their dominance in fine fashion to run out resounding winners.
