U16 Footballers win opening league game

Tuesday Evening, March 24th saw the new season open for the Newmarket U16 football team.

The game was played on a cold evening with a strong wind in favour of the home team, Boherbue, in the first half. From the throw in the Newmarket team fought hard for all the breaks and scored first with a well taken point from Luke McCarthy. However the home side replied with two quick points in the 5th and 7th minutes. The Newmarket equaliser came in the 13th minute from a TJ Brosnan point. The game was now finely balanced with Newmarket boys playing well against the breeze and Boherbue suffering from inaccurate shooting in this period. Newmarket went ahead on 20 minutes from another fine Luke McCarthy Point. The reply coming swift from Boherbue with a point of there own. Then came a well worked goal from the Newmarket back line right up to the forward line with TJ Brosnan stepping up to score. After the goal Boherbue piled on the pressure before half time coming away with a further point and two goals in the space of two minutes just before the break. Score at half time 2-4 to 1-3 in favour of the home side.

The second half was all Newmarket, they seemed to use the breeze to greater advantage than the home side did in the first half, capitalising some great moves with some excellent scores, coming from Luke McCarthy; a goal, David Enright; a point and TJ Brosnan; a goal and a point. It must be said that they where very wasteful with some of the forward play as Boherbue had been in the first half. However the second half dominance by Newmarket paid dividends with Boherbue only managing one point in the second half from a free, due to some excellent last ditch defending by the Newmarket back line. Final Score Boherbue 2-5 – Newmarket3-6. So ending a great team performance by the Newmarket boys with an excellent 8 point turn around and each and every player contributing to a good display, hopefully they can now capitalise on this performance for the rest of the coming games.
