Juniors record a fine win over Rockchapel
Newmarket’s junior footballers recorded a fine win over Rockchapel in the Ducon Cup game played at Rockchapel on Saturday by 2-6 to 0-10.
Newmarket were quick off the mark and the inspirational Shane Murphy kicked over his first point of the afternoon in the fourth minute. Anthony Lynch was on hand a minute later to slot over a second point. The home side were back on terms thanks to two points in quick succession by the fifteenth minute. Shane Murphy kicked two wonderful points in extremely windy conditions from range to edge Newmarket in front again. With four minutes remaining in the half some excellent approach play from Maurice Feehan, Gerard Casey and Shane Murphy saw the latter set Nicky Flanagan through on goal and the impressive corner forward finished superbly to the back of the Rockchapel net. Rockchapel answered with a point but Newmarket’s hopes were further strengthened when Anthony Lynch was on hand to finish to the net from close range for a second Newmarket goal and they led at half time 2-4 to 0-4.
Rockchapel were first to score in the second half before Shane Murphy landed a memorable point from a sideline kick in the third minute. Rockchapel hit back strongly and three points in succession halved the arrears. Shane Anthony Murphy slotted over a point from distance to halt Rockchapel’s charge but they finished strongly and two more points brought them to within two points but a dogged Newmarket outfit held on to claim the points.
