Newmarket advance in Nevin cup

Defending champions Newmarket advanced past the first round of the Nevin Cup when they travelled to Millstreet on Saturday evening and defeated the home side by a single point, 0-8 to 1-4.

Corner forward John Scanlon opened the scoring for Newmarket with Colin O’Sullivan next to find the target. Brian O’Riordan advanced from his centre half back to score a third point and Shane Murphy had Newmarket’s fourth point of the half. Millstreet’s solitary score of the half was the games only goal while a Nicky Flanagan point gave Newmarket a two point advantage at the interval, 0-5 to 1-0.

Newmarket were grateful for the accuracy of centre half forward Shane Anthony Murphy in the second half as he converted three frees to maintain his sides slender advantage at the end.
